  7. Karelia was annexed to Russia by Peter the
  8. Great in 1721 as part of the grand duchy of
  9. Finland. In 1917 part of Karelia was retained
  10. by Finland when it gained its independence
  11. from Russia. The remainder became an
  12. autonomous region 1920 and an autonomous
  13. republic 1923 of the USSR. Following the wars
  14. of 1939-40 and 1941-44, Finland ceded 46,000
  15. sq km/18,000 sq mi to the USSR. Part of this
  16. territory was incorporated in the Russian
  17. Soviet Republic and part in the Karelian
  18. autonomous republic. 400,000 Karelians were
  19. evacuated to Finland on Soviet annexation in
  20. 1940. In 1946 the Karelo-Finnish Soviet
  21. Socialist Republic was set up, but in 1956
  22. the greater part of the republic returned to
  23. its former status as an autonomous Soviet
  24. socialist republic.
